Dance is unique in the way it connects history, culture, our ancestors, and modern life. There is something very special about experiencing the dances of our forebears – the dances that used to be a essential part of their social life, and an ingredient in every celebration. Not only does dance capture the stories of our past in a special form, it remembers and allows us to connect to these stories in the present. It brings a distinctive insight into why our cultural heritage was important in the past and why it is still significant today.
Jane Austen was writing her novels at the time the colonial Australia was being settled. Jane loved dancing and included many dance scenes in her books, highlighting its importance in social life. In the colony, the very same dances known to her were being enjoyed in grand residences, taverns, and private homes. It’s possible D’Arcy Wentworth, a leader in colonial society, was the inspiration for Mr Darcy in Pride & Prejudice. (Learn more on the night!). Even in the Penal Settlement at Moreton Bay (200th anniversary this year), the educated convict, John Bushel, was allowed to teach dancing to the officers and their families.
Join us for an exceptional evening to connect with our intangible cultural heritage.
