Jane Austen Dance for the Australian Heritage Festival

Presented by Samford Community Folk Dancers with awesome live music by Phillip’s Dog.

The theme for the 2024 Australian Heritage Festival is Connections: celebrating the rich and diverse stories of our nation, strengthening cultural and historical ties and encouraging the community to forge new bonds.

Dance has a remarkable ability to bridge the gap between history, culture, our ancestors, and the present. There is a certain magic in experiencing the dances that were once an integral part of our forebears’ social lives and were cherished during celebrations. Dance not only preserves the stories of our past but also enables us to forge a connection with these narratives in the present. It offers a unique perspective on the significance of our cultural heritage both in the past and in the modern day.

Jane Austen was writing her novels at the time the early colony in Australia was being settled.  She loved dancing and included many dance scenes in her books, emphasizing its significance in social life. Interestingly, the same dances that Jane was familiar with were also enjoyed in various settings in the colony – in grand residences, taverns, and private homes. It is even speculated that D’Arcy Wentworth, a prominent figure in colonial society, may have served as the inspiration for Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice. If you want to learn more about this intriguing connection, join us for a night of exploration!

Additionally, it is worth noting that even in the Penal Settlement at Moreton Bay, which is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, an educated convict named John Bushel taught dancing to the officers and their families.

Come and be a part of this special night where you can experience our rich cultural traditions firsthand. All dances taught on the night, no experience or partner necessary. Costumes admired but not required.
